About The Artist

Judy Bumgardner began her career creating polychrome assemblage sculpture using found materials. In 1974 she and her husband, artist James Bumgardner and their young daughter lived in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico for a six month sabbatical from teaching.

Influenced by the masks they were collecting and the writings of Octavio Paz she began paintings in watercolor exploring transparency and paradox of imagery with the face and the mask. The image and symbolism of the metamorphosis of the butterfly came into play.

Further travels in Spain and Belgium led to an interest in the tradition of still life painting of food and the painted platters and tiles of Mexico and Spain entered.
